Love For Surfing

Surfing in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a great place for surfing and has been a popular surf destination since the 1970s. A relatively small, tropical island with an opposite east-west monsoon season, Sri Lanka has two distinct seasons on either side of the island. If you’ve thought about surfing in Sri Lanka, what are you waiting for? High quality waves, warm water and friendly locals will ensure a trip of a lifetime.

“When you are waiting for a wave your mind can think a thousand different things. when you paddle for a wave your mind thinks of only a few things. when you catch a wave your mind thinks of only one thing, that one thing is joy. This is why I surf. ” – Ron

Before you surf, you don’t get it. You seek this mystical, mythical enlightenment which doesn’t exist because it ain’t a movie. It’s an experience. Live it, don’t try to create it. You cannot be any more in the present than when you surf, because any loss of focus and you’re off the board!

Surf culture in Sri Lanka

Surfing in Sri Lanka has a rich history that dates back to the 1960s when foreign travelers and surfers first discovered the island’s perfect waves. Arugam Bay, on the east coast, became the country’s first internationally recognized surf spot, attracting adventurous surfers from around the world. Over the years, local surfers began embracing the sport, and by the 2000s, Sri Lanka had developed a strong surf culture, with local competitions, surf schools, and a growing industry. Today, places like Weligama, Dewata, and Hiriketiya are thriving surf hubs, contributing to tourism and making Sri Lanka one of the top surfing destinations in Asia.

We enjoyed every minute, as beginners didn’t expect too much from the first lesson but we had best instructors who took good care of us. We managed not only to stand but to feel the surfing.
